OPENING A BLOCKED CHARGE PORT DOOR
If your vehicle has a charge port door, it will be located on either the front or the rear of the driver side of the vehicle. Press once on the center of the charge port door’s back edge or, if your vehicle has a Power Charge Port Door, press the indicator located on the charge port door to open it. On select vehicles, a ring will light up around the charging receptacle letting you know it’s ready to be connected. If your charge port door isn’t working as expected, here are some steps you can take.
When the Charge Port Door Isn’t Opening
The charge port door is on the rear driver side of the vehicle. Push the center of the rear edge of the charge port door and release to open. The charge port door may not open due to cold conditions when ice buildup around the door impacts movement.
If your charge port door doesn’t open when you press the center of its back edge or the indicator (if equipped with a Power Charge Port Door), ensure the vehicle is in PARK and check for anything blocking the door (like ice buildup along the edges).
- You can remove ice buildup around the edges by sliding a thin plastic card in the small gap around the charge port door’s edge.
- If ice buildup is too thick to break with a plastic card, lightly push the door at several points around the door’s edge to crack the obstruction.
If you have a Power Charge Port Door that still won’t open, you can open it manually by doing the following:
Note: Select EV models are equipped with a Power Charge Port Door. Refer to your vehicle’s equipment list or Owner’s Manual to determine whether your vehicle has this feature.
- Grasp the top edge of the door with your fingertips and slowly but firmly pull it out and toward the open position.
Note: Don’t use excessive force or speed when manually opening or closing the charge port door. - The door will open gradually, providing the internal mechanism time to adjust.
- To close the door, push it up and in until it reaches the closed position, flush with the side of your vehicle.
Exerting too much force on the charge port door can damage its inner mechanism. You can tell the door has been damaged if:
- The charge port door pops back open when you attempt to close it manually.
- You can only close the charge port door 80-90% of the way.
- You feel an obstruction when attempting to manually close the door.
If you think your door has been damaged, schedule an appointment with your dealership’s service team to address the issue.
