LEARN ABOUT DIGITAL KEY

Digital key offers a seamless way to unlock, lock, or start your vehicle using your paired phone or Apple® watch. You can also access these functions remotely from your device’s wallet, plus open the liftgate. Follow this setup process to get started.

Setting Up Digital Key

Digital key works with Apple® iPhone 11 and later generations, Apple Watch Series 6 and later models, and ultra-wideband (UWB)-supported AndroidTM devices. Digital key is not supported on these iPhone models: SE, XR, and 16e. The initial setup happens in the myCadillac mobile app. After that, the key is stored securely in your device’s digital Apple® Wallet or Google WalletTM.

Enabling Digital Key with Your Phone

  1. Open or download the latest version of the app on your phone.
    - Confirm you’re using the latest device operating system.
  2. Select the “Add key to device wallet” widget.
    - If you don’t see the widget, go to the Controls tab and select the Keys icon, then tap “Add key.”
  3. To continue, make sure:
    - Bluetooth® is turned on.
    - Your phone and key fob are in the vehicle.
    - Your vehicle is on and in PARK with the doors closed.
  4. Follow prompts to pair your phone with digital key.
  5. When successful, your key will appear in your device’s wallet.
  6. Verify that digital key works by exiting the vehicle and using your phone to unlock, lock, or start your vehicle without the key fob.

Using Digital Key

After you set up digital key, you can use your phone or watch* in place of your key fob. Here’s how:

To lock or unlock your vehicle:

  • Approach with your phone and press the button on the door handle or the door handle (depending on your model) — just like you would if you had your key fob with you.
    • With Passive Entry enabled in the Settings menu, the digital key will be detected when your phone is within 2 meters (approximately 6 feet) of the vehicle’s door.
      • This also allows you to unlock and open the liftgate with the exterior button (or hands-free on vehicles equipped with the radar sensor that activates the Hands-Free Power Liftgate).
    • With Passive Locking enabled, the vehicle will lock approximately 8 seconds after you leave with your phone.
      • To receive an audible signal that your vehicle is locked, enable “horn chirp” in the Settings menu.

Note: Presence-based hands-free function (AutoSense Power Liftgate) currently requires the key fob to activate.

To start the vehicle:

  • Press the brake and then press the Power button.
  • In vehicles with no physical Power button, start the vehicle by pressing the brake pedal.
    • In some cases, Hands-Free Start enables the vehicle to start when the driver’s door closes.

*Watch function available on Apple products only.

Remote Commands (Lock, Unlock, Remote Start) with Digital Key

Access key features from your device’s wallet when within Bluetooth range of your vehicle (approximately 30 meters or 100 feet):

  1. Go to your device’s wallet.
  2. Tap the icons on your phone’s screen to perform each function:
    - Lock
    - Unlock
    - Trunk: Opens the liftgate
    - Climate: Remote starts your vehicle and preconditions the cabin temperature.

Sharing Keys

With digital key, you can add recipients through your wallet app, enabling access for up to 3 people. Here’s how:

  • Open your device’s wallet.
  • Select the Share icon at the top-right corner of the digital key screen.
  • Choose a method of sending the digital key to a friend, family member, or other trusted person — just like sharing photos from your phone.
    - Some options are: text message, email, Airdrop, etc.
    - Options displayed depend on what’s installed on your phone.

Note: Digital key recipients must have a UWB-compatible device. They don’t need the myCadillac app to receive the digital key.

Removing Keys

The account owner can remove their key as well as shared keys. Key recipients can only remove the key shared with them. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the device’s wallet app and select “remove key.”
  2. Contact an OnStar® Advisor by pressing your blue button or calling 888-4ONSTAR (888-466-7827).

If your device is lost or stolen, you may receive prompts to “remove owner key” and to initialize key pairing on the new phone.

Using Your Key Card as a Backup

While digital key can be the primary way of accessing and starting your vehicle, you can use the key card that may be provided with your vehicle for valet parking or as a backup if your phone loses battery or is lost or stolen. However, you must bring your physical key fob to all vehicle service visits.

Note: One key card may be provided to you along with your key fobs. You can purchase up to 7 additional key cards from your dealer. Your dealer can also deactivate lost cards to help prevent unauthorized vehicle access.

For your security, please don't include personal info such as phone number, address or credit card details.

Q&As

HOW DO I ENABLE DIGITAL KEY?

To begin the digital key journey, you must accept the OnStar Terms and Conditions and Privacy Statement, have connectivity in your vehicle, and download the myCadillac mobile app.

HOW MANY DEVICES CAN I SHARE MY DIGITAL KEY WITH?

You can share your digital key with up to 3 people across 8 devices. Recipients aren’t required to have the myCadillac mobile app, but their devices must be UWB-capable.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I LOSE MY PHONE?

If you lose your device, you can remove your key from your digital wallet by contacting your device manufacturer. After you’ve removed the key, you can complete the setup process to add digital key to another phone. If your vehicle is equipped with a key card, you can use it to access and start your vehicle. Refer to the back of your key card for the location of the exterior key card reader, which varies by model.

If you purchase a new phone, you’ll receive prompts to remove your key and transfer it to the new phone.

HOW DO I REMOVE MY DIGITAL KEY?

You can remove a digital key 2 ways:

  • From the device's wallet app, select "remove key."
  • Contact an OnStar Advisor at 888-4ONSTAR (888-466-7827) or by pressing the OnStar blue button.

Recipients of shared keys can only remove the key that’s been shared with them.

HOW DOES DIGITAL KEY DIFFER FROM THE REMOTE COMMANDS IN THE MYCADILLAC APP?

Digital key allows you to perform some of the same short-range remote commands that are available in the mobile app (climate, lock/unlock) when you’re within Bluetooth range of the vehicle. The main differences are:

  1. With digital key, these functions are accessed through the wallet of your paired device.
  2. Users of digital key can drive the vehicle without needing the key fob. This function is not available in the mobile app.

CAN THE DIGITAL KEY OWNER RESTRICT FUNCTION FOR A SHARED KEY?

Yes, the key owner can set the shared key to only be capable of locking/unlocking the vehicle. In this case, the recipient would not be able to start the vehicle with their shared key.

CAN I USE DIGITAL KEY TO ACTIVATE MY AUTOSENSE POWER LIFTGATE?

No. The hands-free liftgate function can only be activated with digital key in vehicles equipped with a kick-sensing radar (Hands-Free Power Liftgate).

CAN I USE VALET PARKING SERVICES WITH DIGITAL KEY?

Yes. For valet parking with digital key, simply give the valet attendant your key card, the same way you would a key fob.

DOES USING DIGITAL KEY IN COMBINATION WITH THE BACKUP KEY CARD REPLACE MY KEY FOB ENTIRELY?

No. There are certain instances when you will have to use your key fob instead of digital key or the key card. For example, it’s important to always bring the key fob to your vehicle’s service visits. This ensures technicians can properly access the vehicle.
